Too many organisations pursue opportunities based on optimism rather than evidence, wasting resources on deals they were unlikely to win.
Most organisations have some form of bid/no-bid process. The problem is that many qualification decisions are heavily influenced by pipeline pressure, enthusiasm or deal size rather than objective evidence.
Recent Capture Benchmarker responses show significant variation in qualification maturity. Some organisations have robust qualification processes and long-term opportunity visibility. Others describe inconsistent decision-making, reactive bidding and limited visibility of future opportunities.
The result is predictable. Teams spend valuable time pursuing low-probability opportunities while high-potential deals receive less attention than they deserve.
Strong pursuit organisations treat qualification as an investment decision.
They start by defining the criteria that genuinely predict success. Typical measures include strategic fit, customer access, delivery capability, competitive position, expected return and available resources.
They also recognise that qualification is not a one-off event. Customer priorities change. Competitors move. Procurement strategies evolve. The original bid decision should be tested throughout the pursuit phase.
Three practical improvements can make a significant difference:
1. Create evidence-based qualification criteria
Move beyond simple bid/no-bid discussions. Use structured scoring to assess whether the opportunity is real, desirable, winnable and deliverable.
2. Requalify opportunities regularly
Review your position whenever significant customer, commercial or competitive information emerges.
3. Document assumptions and actions
Qualification should create action. Every major assumption should have an owner, a validation plan and a review date.
The best organisations do not chase every opportunity. They focus resources where they can genuinely influence the outcome and create a position to win.
Better qualification does not reduce growth. It improves the quality of the opportunities that enter your pipeline.
