Why your presentation should not repeat the proposal

Many presentation teams repeat information the customer has already read. The best teams use the presentation to build confidence and strengthen preference.

The presentation is a decision-making opportunity

The challenge

After weeks of effort developing a proposal, it's understandable that teams want to showcase the work they've produced. The result is often a presentation that mirrors the proposal, repeats key sections and walks the audience through information they already know.

Proposal Benchmarker responses suggest that proposal-to-presentation continuity is inconsistent across organisations. Some teams still create presentation materials independently of the work-winning story developed during the proposal stage. Others focus heavily on slides rather than the customer decision they are trying to influence.

Overcoming the challenge

Customers rarely invite suppliers to present simply to hear the proposal read back to them.

They invite suppliers because they want to test confidence, credibility, chemistry and delivery capability.

The proposal answers the written questions. The presentation answers the unspoken ones.

Three practical improvements can help.

1. Focus on what the customer still needs to believe

Before developing the presentation, ask what concerns, risks or questions are likely to remain after the proposal has been evaluated.

  • Do they believe you understand their challenge?
  • Do they trust your team?
  • Do they believe you can deliver?

These are often the issues the presentation should address.

2. Build the presentation around people, proof and delivery

The strongest presentation presentations use real examples, delivery experience and practical evidence. They help the customer picture what working with your organisation will actually feel like.

This is where proposal writing and presentation delivery need to work together. The proposal creates credibility. The presentation

3. Use the proposal as a foundation, not a script

The winning story should remain consistent. The format should change.

A proposal informs.

A presentation persuades.

The best presentation teams build on the proposal and move the conversation forward rather than repeating what the customer has already seen.
